Position Overview

The BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) Field Engineer plays a key role in the commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of large-scale energy storage systems. This position supports the deployment of advanced renewable energy projects by ensuring that battery systems, power conversion equipment, and protection and control components are safely and efficiently integrated into the grid. The role combines strong electrical engineering knowledge with hands-on field expertise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform field installation support, testing, and commissioning of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), including PCS, Aux power load banks, fire suppression systems, thermal management systems, inverters, transformers, control systems, and protection relays.
  • Conduct site inspections, functional testing, and system validation to verify design compliance and operational readiness.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, control, and communication issues within BESS and associated substation or renewable energy infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with design engineers, contractors, and utility representatives to ensure successful integration and grid interconnection.
  • Perform thermal management troubleshooting, repairs, analysis of Liquid Cool and Air-Cool systems.
  • Conduct functional testing and repairs of fire suppression systems. Including control panels, sensors and communications.
  • Support Protection & Control (P&C) setup and verify correct relay logic, SCADA signals, and control sequences.
  • Perform system performance monitoring, preventive maintenance, and root-cause analysis of system failures or alarms.
  • Ensure adherence to industry codes, safety standards (OSHA, NFPA 70E), and company procedures.
  • Prepare detailed commissioning reports, test results, and field documentation for project closeout.
  • Assist in training and mentoring field technicians or junior engineers on BESS operations and safety practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field (or equivalent experience) is preferred.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in electrical systems, renewable energy, or substation protection and control.
  • Familiarity with BESS technology, PCS (Power Conversion Systems), Central Inverters, EMS/SCADA, and grid-tied systems.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting single-line diagrams, schematics, and protection settings.
  • Hands-on experience with electrical testing equipment (multimeters, insulation resistance testing, relay test sets, IR cameras, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of AC/DC systems, communication protocols (Modbus, DNP3), and inverter control logic.
  • Excellent troubleshooting, reporting, and communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites across multiple states and work in field environments.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with utility-scale renewable projects (Battery Energy Storage + Solar+ wind).
  • Knowledge of commissioning software tools and test equipment such as BMS, Modbus Poll, Power Comms, Power Xpert, Omicron or Doble.
  • Prior work with NEC, IEEE, and NERC reliability standards.
  • OSHA 10/30 and First Aid/CPR certification a plus.

Work Environment

This is a field-based role requiring travel to active construction and commissioning sites. The engineer may work in varying outdoor conditions, including substations, renewable energy plants, and remote utility locations.
