Position Overview

The Substation Electrician performs electrical installation, maintenance, and repair work on high-voltage substations and related equipment. This role supports utility and renewable energy projects, ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable operation of substations, switchgear, transformers, and protection systems. The position requires strong hands-on electrical skills, strict adherence to safety standards, and the ability to work effectively in field environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, terminate, and test high- and low-voltage wiring, conduit, and control cables in substations.
  • Assemble, wire, and connect switchgear, circuit breakers, transformers, relays, and control panels according to electrical drawings and standards.
  • Assist in commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting of protection and control systems.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on substation equipment, including cleaning, torqueing, and insulation checks.
  • Support engineers and technicians in verifying control logic, interlocks, and relay functions.
  • Operate and maintain electrical tools, test instruments, and heavy equipment safely.
  • Read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and single-line drawings.
  • Document all work performed and complete daily field reports.
  • Follow all OSHA, NFPA 70E, and company safety regulations, including lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures.
  • Collaborate with project managers, field engineers, and utility representatives to ensure project success and schedule adherence.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; completion of an electrical apprenticeship or technical program preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience as an electrician in utility, industrial, or substation environments.
  • Strong understanding of AC/DC systems, grounding, control circuits, and electrical protection devices.
  • Ability to use electrical test equipment (multimeters, meggers, phasing sticks, etc.) safely and accurately.
  • Experience working around high-voltage (69 kV–500 kV) equipment and systems.
  • Excellent attention to detail, troubleshooting ability, and adherence to safety standards.
  • Willingness to travel to multiple job sites and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in substation construction, commissioning, or maintenance.
  • Familiarity with relay testing and P&C systems.
  • Certification or training in OSHA 10/30, NFPA 70E, and First Aid/CPR.
  • Knowledge of NERC, IEEE, and NEC standards.
  • Ability to operate substation equipment such as aerial lifts, cranes, or cable pullers (if certified).

Work Environment

This is a field-based position requiring travel to active substation and renewable project sites across the U.S. Work involves exposure to high-voltage electrical equipment, construction conditions, and outdoor environments. Safety, professionalism, and teamwork are essential at all times.
