Position Overview

The Protection & Control (P&C) Technician is responsible for the installation, wiring, testing, and maintenance of protection, control, and automation systems in high-voltage substations. This role supports commissioning engineers and ensures that all protection schemes and control equipment are installed and operating correctly in accordance with design specifications, utility standards, and safety requirements.
The position requires strong hands-on technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work safely and effectively in field environments across multiple project sites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the installation and wiring of protection and control panels, relays, and related substation equipment.
  • Perform functional testing, point-to-point checks, and verification of control circuits, alarms, and interlocks.
  • Support commissioning and energization activities under the supervision of P&C and commissioning engineers.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and troubleshooting of protective relays, breakers, transformers, and SCADA systems.
  • Operate and maintain test equipment such as multimeters, relay test sets (Omicron, Doble, Megger), and insulation testers.
  • Verify relay settings, logic, and tripping schemes against design documentation.
  • Document test results, issues, and resolutions in detailed field and commissioning reports.
  • Follow all NEEC and client safety procedures, including lockout/tagout (LOTO), PPE use, and substation entry requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with engineers, construction teams, and utility representatives to ensure project success.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree, technical certification, or equivalent field experience in Electrical Engineering Technology or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 2–5 years of experience in P&C field testing, relay maintenance, or substation operations.
  • Familiarity with protective relays (SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens) and their associated software tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
  • Proficiency with electrical and electronic testing tools and basic relay testing procedures.
  • Strong understanding of AC/DC control circuits, grounding, and communication systems.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to work independently in the field.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites across the U.S. and work in substation environments.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience supporting utility or EPC substation projects.
  • Working knowledge of DNP3, Modbus, and IEC 61850 communication protocols.
  • Familiarity with SCADA/RTU systems and data point verification.
  • OSHA 10/30 certification and NFPA 70E electrical safety training preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid certifications are a plus.

Work Environment

This is a field-based position that involves travel to substations and renewable project sites. The role includes work in outdoor environments and around high-voltage electrical equipment. Strict adherence to safety procedures and quality standards is required.
