Position Overview

The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Technician supports the installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of large-scale battery energy storage systems deployed across utility and renewable energy projects. This role involves hands-on electrical and mechanical work in the field to ensure reliable system performance, safety, and compliance with design and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the installation, wiring, and testing of battery energy storage components, including battery packs/racks, PCS, inverters, fire suppression systems, thermal management systems, transformers, and switchgear.
  • Support commissioning and startup activities under the supervision of a BESS Field Engineer or Commissioning Lead.
  • Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting of BESS systems, control panels, and electrical connections.
  • Verify and document proper system operation, including power, communication, and control signals between BESS, inverter, FSS, and SCADA systems.
  • Monitor alarms, fault codes, and equipment parameters to ensure stable and safe operation.
  • Follow strict lockout/tagout (LOTO) and safety procedures when working with high- voltage equipment.
  • Maintain accurate service logs, test data, and daily activity reports for project documentation.
  • Work collaboratively with engineers, contractors, and utility representatives during field assignments.
  • Identify opportunities to improve installation quality, efficiency, and system reliability.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree, technical diploma, or equivalent experience in electrical, electronic, or mechanical systems.
  • Minimum 2 years of field experience in power systems, renewable energy, or industrial electrical work preferred.
  • Familiarity with BESS technology, PCS, inverters, and energy management systems (EMS/SCADA) preferred.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and single-line drawings.
  • Skilled in using electrical testing tools (multimeters, insulation testers, torque wrenches, etc.).
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Willingness to travel to field sites and work in varying weather and construction environments.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with utility-scale solar + storage or wind + storage systems.
  • Knowledge of communication protocols (Modbus, DNP3, TCP/IP).
  • OSHA 10/30 certification and familiarity with NFPA 70E safety standards.
  • CPR/First Aid certification a plus.

Work Environment

This is a field-based role requiring travel to active construction and commissioning sites. The engineer may work in varying outdoor conditions, including substations, renewable energy plants, and remote utility locations.
