Position Overview

The Safety Specialist is responsible for implementing and monitoring NEEC’s safety programs across substation, renewable energy, and construction projects. This position ensures compliance with federal, state, and client safety regulations and promotes a culture of safety awareness throughout all field operations. The Safety Specialist works closely with project managers, field supervisors, and crew members to identify risks, provide training, and verify that all work is performed safely and efficiently in accordance with NEEC and OSHA standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement and oversee site-specific safety programs for substation, BESS, and renewable energy projects.
  • Conduct daily site safety inspections, audits, and hazard assessments to ensure compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70E, and company procedures.
  • Lead safety orientations, toolbox talks, and training sessions for employees and subcontractors.
  • Investigate and document incidents, near-misses, and safety violations, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Monitor compliance with Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), fall protection, confined space, and electrical safety procedures.
  • Collaborate with field and construction management to develop Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) and Pre-Task Plans (PTPs) for daily activities.
  • Maintain and track safety documentation, including inspection reports, training records, and corrective action logs.
  • Support root-cause analysis and incident reporting processes, ensuring timely communication and resolution.
  • Serve as a liaison between NEEC, clients, and regulatory agencies on all safety matters.
  • Promote a proactive safety culture by engaging with field teams and reinforcing NEEC’s “zero-incident” commitment.
  • Support corporate audits, insurance reviews, and compliance evaluations as required.

Qualifications

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, or related field, or equivalent field experience.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in safety management within utility, substation, or renewable energy construction.
  • In-depth knowledge of OSHA 1910/1926, NFPA 70E, and other industry safety standards.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting field inspections, audits, and employee safety training.
  • Excellent communication, observation, and reporting skills.
  • Ability to work independently in field environments and travel to multiple project sites across the U.S.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, safety reporting tools, and incident management systems.

Preferred Skills

  • OSHA 30, NFPA 70E, First Aid/CPR, and PEC certifications strongly preferred.
  • CHST (Construction Health and Safety Technician) or CSP (Certified Safety Professional) certification is an asset.
  • Experience with electrical or high-voltage environments, including substations and energy storage systems.
  • Knowledge of DOT, EPA, and state environmental safety regulations.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills to engage field crews and promote accountability.

Work Environment

This is a field-based role with travel to active substation and renewable project sites across the country. The Safety Specialist works outdoors in various weather conditions and must be comfortable around high-voltage equipment, heavy machinery, and construction operations. Strict adherence to PPE and safety protocols is required at all times.
