Position Overview

The Substation Electrician Lead oversees and performs electrical construction, installation, testing, and maintenance work for high-voltage substations. This role combines advanced technical expertise with leadership responsibilities, ensuring that all substation electrical work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with project specifications and industry standards. The Substation Electrician Lead supervises field crews, coordinates with engineers and project managers, and provides technical direction to ensure high-quality workmanship and safe energization of substation equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise substation electricians and technicians during installation, wiring, and testing of electrical equipment.
  • Plan and coordinate daily work activities, ensuring alignment with project schedules, drawings, and safety requirements.
  • Perform and oversee installation, termination, and testing of control cables, switchgear, transformers, relays, and grounding systems.
  • Conduct quality inspections and functional checks of electrical systems to verify compliance with design documents.
  • Collaborate closely with P&C engineers, commissioning teams, and utility representatives during testing and energization phases.
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical or control circuit issues during construction and commissioning.
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with OSHA, NFPA 70E, and NEEC safety policies, including proper use of PPE and lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures.
  • Maintain detailed project documentation, including redlines, field reports, and equipment test results.
  • Train and mentor junior electricians and apprentices on substation safety, installation techniques, and electrical standards.
  • Participate in project planning meetings, providing input on constructability, safety, and scheduling.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; completion of an electrical apprenticeship or technical training program preferred.
  • Minimum 5-8 years of experience in substation electrical installation, maintenance, or commissioning.
  • Proven experience leading field crews in utility or EPC substation projects.
  • Strong knowledge of high-voltage systems (69 kV–500 kV), AC/DC circuits, relays, switchgear, and transformers.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and one-line drawings.
  • Proficiency with electrical testing tools (multimeters, meggers, phasing sticks, relay test sets, etc.).
  • Excellent communication, coordination, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety and quality control.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites across multiple states and work outdoors in various conditions.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience supporting protection & control (P&C) systems or commissioning activities.
  • Familiarity with SCADA and control panel wiring.
  • Certifications in OSHA 10/30, NFPA 70E, First Aid/CPR, and electrical safety training.
  • Understanding of NERC, IEEE, and NEC standards for substation design and operation.
  • Experience with leadership reporting tools, daily logs, or field management systems.

Work Environment

This is a field-based leadership role requiring travel to substation and renewable project sites throughout the United States. The position involves hands-on work around high-voltage electrical equipment and outdoor environments. The Substation Electrician Lead must model safety excellence and ensure all team members follow company and client procedures at all times.
